Back to school: why your child's eye exam changes everything

A child who can't see the board won't tell you — they quietly check out. Back-to-school is the right time to check.

A child squinting in class, sitting closer to the board, rubbing their eyes at night — those are signals. But children often don't even know their vision is blurry: to them, that's just how the world looks. That's why annual exams matter.

100% covered by RAMQ

For every child from 0 to 17, a complete eye exam is covered each year by RAMQ. No cost, no cap. Bring your child's health insurance card — that's all you need.

What we check

  • Visual acuity at distance and up close.
  • Binocular vision (are both eyes working together?).
  • Detection of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.
  • Overall ocular health (fundus, pressure).
  • Signs of strabismus or lazy eye (amblyopia), which are treatable early.
