RAMQ, private insurance and the eye exam: who pays for what?

32, 8, 67, diabetic, Sun Life Standard or nothing at all? Let's untangle your coverage in 5 minutes — no admin jargon.

Québec health insurance card and an eye-exam receipt from an optometrist

RAMQ: who is covered?

  • Ages 0 to 17: a complete exam every year, 100% covered.
  • Ages 65 and up: one exam per year, 100% covered.
  • Anyone with diabetes (any age): one exam per year.
  • People with an identified ocular condition: specific coverage.

How do you know what your private plan covers?

  1. 1Look for the "Vision care" section in your insurance booklet.
  2. 2Check two numbers: the eye exam (often once every 24 months for adults) and eyewear/contacts (usually a 24-month cap).
  3. 3Note whether your plan reimburses directly or whether you pay up front and get reimbursed later.

At Vision770, we hand you a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurer. Our team can also verify your coverage before you buy — no surprises at checkout.

CNESST, SAAQ and CSST: yes, too

If you need safety eyewear for work, or your vision was affected by an accident, specific coverage exists. Bring your file number in store — we handle the rest.
